Patients Debate Replacing Wires

December 17th, 2007 · No Comments

Since Medtronic recalled their leads in October, roughly a quarter of a million people have wondered whether the lead meant to save their life will fail or accomplish its purpose. The most common debate is whether or not they should replace the leads and defibrillators or not. This decision is meant to erase doubt of failure.

One of the issues in the debate between replacing the leads is how to pay for it. Medtronic is currently only contributing a new lead and $800 to the procedure. The procedure can cost upwards of $12,500. Insurers are currently decided to cover the costs of the replacement on a case-by-case basis. Others are covering the costs only if the lead has already fractured.

In addition to the costs of the procedure, there are really serious side effects of the surgery as well. In addition to the risk of infection and the general risks of undergoing surgery that are associated with anesthetics, the procedure can puncture the heart or the arteries in the chest. In addition, there can be damage done to the heart valves when the current lead is removed.

The whole fiasco has drawn attention to the way medical devices are approved by the FDA. It has also sparked investigations by both houses of Congress.
