Medtronic, as well as the other two big companies that produce pacemakers, has announced that it is going to study whether deep brain stimulation can be an effective treatment for people with severe depression that does not respond to other treatments.
The study will involve taking the basic pacemaker and defibrillator technology with a few slight modifications. The main modification is that the leads will run to the brain instead of the heart. In a trial conducted in only 6 people, 4 of them saw decreased depression while using the deep brain stimulation.
In addition to attempting to adapt the pacemaker technology to depression treatment, Medtronic also has a method for pain management (recently approved by the FDA) and is looking into obesity and Alzheimer’s treatments all using the same technology.
If you or someone you know has experienced pain due to a defective defibrillator, contact the Medtronic lawsuit attorneys of Williams Kherkher at 1-866-950-9000 to discuss your case and to schedule an initial consultation.
